The lingering scent thing definitely happened to me while I was still working with direct patient care. If it was on or from a patient's body, I'd be smelling it long into the evening despite showering and changing clothes after work. I also had a few food aversion because of it; I couldn't eat sauerkraut for a good five years after working at a nursing home that fed it to their residents on a regular basis. It also had a great laxative effect on them.
I’m agreeing with OP and to counter that, my poops started smelling like my girlfriends at a certain point. We have wildly different diets as she’s a picky eater with frequent stomach/bowel problems. I’m also an amateur perfumer with a keen sense of smell and it’s certainly not lingering particles in my nasal. I’ve been tracking the smell of my poops for decades whether I like it or not!

I think a changed microbiome is also a possibility. I have wondered how old affects someone with a healthy oral flora when they start dating someone with strong paradontosis, caries etc; couldn’t it also have a negative impact? The advice is alteady to not lick off your kids spoons and pacifiers and just put them back, because you might transfer your caries bacteria to the child. Might be a mixture of both.
